The main campus houses up to 100 boys who reside in one of five cottages
or 3 independent living units. Most are referrals by the County Departments
of Probation. We serve Los Angeles County as well as several counties
throughout the State of California.
Trained social workers assigned to each boy formulae individualized
treatment plans. These therapists along with youth care counselors, nurses,
educators, psychiatrists, recreation staff and, in many cases a chemical
dependency counselor, make up the treatment team.
Youth Care Counselors provide basic nurturing, custody, control, and provide
consistency of routine for the boys. Youngsters eat in a central dining hall and
are accompanied by staff at all times.
A host of recreation staff provides a variety of activities for our young people in
order to teach age appropriate use of leisure time, to help them achieve
pro-social success experiences, an understanding of teamwork and to
develop leadership qualities.
Nursing staff attends to basic medical and dental needs through direct service
and/or referral to outside medical personnel.
Psychiatrists assess the mental health of each boy, act as consultants to the
social workers, and prescribe and/or monitor the use of psychotropic
medication when indicated.
A typical day begins with early wake-up (6:00 am) followed by personal
hygiene, breakfast and chores. School begins at 8:00 AM and continues
through 2:10 PM including lunch. After school is group therapy, followed by
recreation therapy and other adjunctive therapies until dinner. Evening
recreation and study time follows dinner and lights are out early keeping
with our structured time philosophy.
Dispersed throughout the week are work experiences (including our FINE
program), shopping, laundry times, individual and family therapy, visits from
county workers and parents and other activities. There is little idle time.
Religious activity is offered if the boy wishes to participate. Family
involvement is an essential part of our program.
