PROGRAMS & SERVICES
Thank you for your interest in the Resource Family and Adoption program. There are many children in our community who need a safe, caring family like yours, and we thank you for taking this first step in making a difference in the life of a child.
As a resource parent, your family would work in partnership with a team of social workers and other professionals to meet the needs of children who have suffered abuse and neglect. Resource parents play an important part in our community by helping children and strengthening families so they can have a bright future.
WHO CAN BE A RESOURCE PARENT?
Any person, single or married who has a desire to provide
children with a safe, caring home and:
• Is at least 18 years old
• Has space available in their home for children
• Has a car and car insurance
• Has a stable income
• Does not have a criminal record or child abuse record
Individuals interested in joining our team of resource parents must complete our resource parent approval process. This process includes:
Participation in our free training program:
Classes are offered in West Palmdale office & L.A. office.
A safety inspection of your home:
Foster homes need to meet state and county requirements and be safe, clean, and in good repair. Homes with a pool or jacuzzi need to meet additional safety requirements, including a 5-foot fence that completely surrounds the pool.
Fingerprint clearance for all individuals age 18 and older residing in your home.
Submitting application paperwork.
The approval process takes approximately 2 to 4 months. Optimist will work with you to decide the number, age, and gender of children you will be able to foster. Some factors taken into consideration include: geographical location, the child’s language, culture, or religious needs, your parenting skills and experience with children, and your work schedule.
Becoming a resource parent is a process. Should your circumstances change, you can discontinue the process at any time. Our goal is to help you become part of the Optimist family and join us in our mission to help children and families. Resource parents are compensated for the child’s expenses. Medical and dental costs are covered by free Medi-Cal insurance.
The goal of foster care is family reunification - helping children reunite with their families. At times, this is not possible so Optimist is also able to help families adopt children who need a permanent family.
Your next step in becoming a resource parent is to schedule a short consultation meeting with one of our Certification Assistants who will be able to answer your questions and provide you with more information. Please call (661) 272-4733 to schedule a meeting.
Optimist thanks you for your interest in our resource family program.
