As a foster parent, your family would work in partnership with a team of social workers and
other professionals to meet the needs of children who have suffered abuse and neglect.
Foster parents play an important part in our community by helping children and strengthening
families so that they can have a bright future.
WHO CAN BE A FOSTER PARENT?
Any person, single or married who has a desire to provide
children with a safe, caring home and:
• Is at least 21 years old
• Has space available in their home for children
• Has a car and car insurance
• Has a stable income
• Does not have a criminal record or child abuse record
Individuals interested in joining our team of foster parents must complete our foster
parent certification process. This process includes:
Participation in our free training program:
Classes are offered in West Palmdale office.
A safety inspection of your home:
Foster homes need to meet state and county requirements and be safe, clean, and in good
repair. Homes with a pool or jacuzzi need to meet additional safety requirements, including
a five foot fence that completely surrounds the pool.
Fingerprint clearance for all individuals age 18 and older residing in your home.
Submitting application paperwork.
The certification process takes approximately 2 to 4 months. Optimist will work with you to
decide the number, age, and gender of children that you will be able to foster. Some factors
that are taken into consideration include: geographical location, the child’s language, culture,
or religious needs, your parenting skills and experience with children, and your work schedule.
Becoming a foster parent is a process. Should your circumstances change, you can
discontinue the process at any time. Our goal is to help you become part of the Optimist family
and join us in our mission to help children and families. Foster parents are compensated for
the child’s expenses. Medical and dental costs are covered by free Medi-Cal insurance.
The goal of foster care is family reunification - helping children with their families. At times this
is not possible so Optimist is also able to help families reunite adopt children who need a
