Looking to develop a meaningful and impactful connection with a youth in residential care? Consider mentoring an Optimist resident!

Our mentoring program is designed to provide our kids with caring, supportive, and enriching adult relationships. As a mentor you can spend your supervised one-on-one time with your mentee on an activity of your choosing. You could play music together in the chapel, or sketch on the grass field. Maybe you and your mentee will choose to go for a walk around campus and talk. Every 1-2 hour weekly session will be a different opportunity to facilitate in the growth and success of an Optimist youth.

To become a mentor you must pass a background check, TB, and drug test, as well as complete a training course that consists of both in-person and online components. You will then be matched with a resident living at one of our 6 locations. Mentors commit to making contact with their mentees at least once a week for a minimum of 6 months. Mentoring sessions typically occur for one hour on weekdays between 3:30 and 7:00pm.

If you are 21 years or older and interested in learning more, please fill out an application.

Looking to share your instrumental knowledge, or lead a comic book drawing workshop? Have a skill or trade youd love to share with our residents? Volunteer with Optimist youth!

As a volunteer you will commit to 2-6 months of engaging with our residents in a group setting. Our volunteer coordinator will help you plan a 4-6 week workshop where you can develop a rapport with the kids and teach something that may be new to them. Our residents sleep, eat, and go to school on campus. Volunteering helps residents engage with the community outside Optimist, and develop interests and experiences that they will carry with them well into adulthood. Past workshops have featured cooking, financial literacy, career planning, exercise, art, and music.

Volunteers must pass a background, TB, and drug test as well as complete a training course that consists of both in-person and online components. If you are 21 years or older and interested in volunteering, tell us about your ideal workshop in the application.

"I do a DJ workshop for the students and music to me is a creative outlet and it lets the students express  themselves - through music." - Greg, volunteer
"What you're doing is offering hope to kids who may feel hopeless, you're caring for kids who may not have felt cared for in the past."  -J.T., volunteer

Only have time to volunteer a day or two no problem!
You can volunteer on one of our short-term or special projects!

Volunteers can sign up to help with short-term or special projects throughout the year. We customize the task depending on the volunteers interest, skills, and available schedule. These projects last anywhere from 1-5 days. Please note that short-term project volunteers will not have direct contact with the foster children living in our facilities.

We welcome volunteers aged 18 and older for short-term projects. Volunteers ages 14-17 are allowed to volunteer on short-term or special projects if accompanied by a legal guardian.

Short term and special projects are GREAT for church or religious groups, service and social organizations, corporate volunteering for team building, a group of friends/families that want to give back to their community, or individuals who want to learn more about the organization. Some examples of special projects include assisting with our annual Holiday Gift Drive or Foster Family Holiday Party, helping with fundraising, wrapping gifts for our youth during the holidays, designing murals, and helping with both large and small events such as our annual Gala, campus clean-up projects, and more!

Contact us at volunteer@oyhfs.org to learn more about volunteering on a special project and tell us a little bit about you and your group!
